Lloyd EcoDistrict is a Portland-based nonprofit on a mission to promote equity, resilience, and climate protection at the local level. We recently became a nationally certified EcoDistrict, and we’re currently welcoming a new Communication & Outreach Specialist to help us implement our community-driven plan for a connected, prosperous, and resilient neighborhood.

Communication & Outreach Specialist Role

The Communication & Outreach Specialist is a part-time (~15 hours/week) paid internship/ entry-level position to assist with our communications and outreach work.

This position will assist in crafting strategy, stories, messaging, and events that will engage our community on a variety of climate protection, equity, and resiliency projects. The position will assist in improving our organization’s communication structure and outreach activities. This position will make connections across the breadth of the Lloyd neighborhood: with non-profits, government agencies, property managers, business leaders, and residents. This position is an excellent fit for someone interested in developing their skills as a marketing, communications, or public relations professional and gaining real-world experience in developing community at a sustainability-focused nonprofit.

Specific tasks may include:

  • General marketing support: email marketing, social media, and web-based support.
  • Write, create & distribute social media posts through various channels.
  • Write and package stories (blogs, interviews, event recaps) for external publication.
  • Support planning and execution of virtual and in-person events, such as emergency preparedness workshops and neighborhood/park cleanups.

What skills or expertise will you need for this position?

Recommended: (Note: if you have some but not all of these skills/experiences, please do still apply!)

  • Background and/or interest in learning about climate protection, resiliency/ emergency preparedness, and/or equity work.
  • Interest and/or experience in crafting stories and/or messaging for different audiences.
  • Ability to work independently, self-directed and confidently in a variety of settings (e.g. small business, government, corporate, and/or local community groups).
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and a demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Experience planning or helping to manage small events.
  • Readiness to to be creative, ask questions, and contribute to a small, friendly, dedicated team.
  • Ability to occasionally be available during evenings or weekends to support in-person or virtual events and meetings

Nice-to-haves:

  • Proficiency with social media and prior work experience using social media platforms.
  • Proficiency in graphic design programs such as InDesign, Canva, etc.
  • Familiarity with web publishing platforms such as WordPress.

Hours and Position Length:

Ideally 15 hours per week, depending on availability/interest. The position is expected to last through spring 2023 though has the potential to be extended or expanded.

Compensation: $15/hour

Supervisor: Joshua Baker, Outreach Program Manager

Location: Lloyd EcoDistrict has an office at 2203 Lloyd Center, Portland, OR 97232. Staff is largely working remotely at this time, though this position is expected to be able to be available to attend limited in-person events in the Lloyd neighborhood in NE Portland.
