Keaton Otis Memorial Art Unveiling

Since 2019 Lloyd EcoDistrict has been working with the Black-led Justice for Keaton Otis collective to memorialize the life of Keaton Otis, who was fatally shot by police in Lloyd in 2010. We’ve been working with the Justice for Keaton Otis collective to create a permanent memorial at NE 6th and NE Halsey. Over 2020 and 2021 we partnered with them to organize visioning sessions that gathered Keaton’s loved ones, several Portland-based Black artists, and community members impacted by police violence to develop a plan for a memorial and gathering space in Lloyd.

We are pleased to announce a save the date for the unveiling of the first phase of the Keaton Otis Memorial Art Project. The first phase in this art project is kintsugi-inspired, the Japanese art of mending broken pottery by filling the cracks with gold. Volunteers and artists have been filling the cracks in the street where Keaton was fatally shot.

Join us on Monday, Sept. 12, 5-8 pm at NE 6th and Halsey. There will be speeches and performances as we come together to celebrate and honor Keaton’s life. This will be a family-friendly event (we will have some activities for kids, though childcare is not provided)

Given the current state of the pandemic, we ask folks to wear a mask. We will have masks and hand sanitizer available as well.

Updates are posted on the Justice for Keaton Otis Facebook page.
