We are a small nonprofit with a big vision: to ensure Portland’s Lloyd neighborhood is one of the most sustainable neighborhoods in North America, and a leader in equity, resilience, and climate protection at the local level. 

Our Mission

Board members uplift and further the mission, vision, and objectives of Lloyd EcoDistrict. Here, volunteers from the community help paint a street mural, a type of placemaking project that not only beautifies the neighborhood but brings community members together creating new bonds and a more resilient community.

Lloyd EcoDistrict engages the community, forms partnerships, and develops programs that create a connected, prosperous, and resilient neighborhood.

How We Work

We set goals and implement initiatives in Lloyd that promote climate protection, equity, and resilience. We prioritize projects addressing connectivity, health & wellbeing, living infrastructure, peace, place, prosperity, and resource regeneration.

Joining Our Board

Lloyd EcoDistrict is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors who provide strategic direction and financial oversight for the organization. We strive to make being part of the Board of Directors as accessible and rewarding an experience as possible, and we offer all new board members orientation, training, and mentoring so they can thrive. 

Currently, we’re seeking new board members committed to equity, resilience, and climate, and who are ready to roll up their sleeves to help implement our community-driven plan for a connected and prosperous neighborhood. 

We value having a broad range of personal and professional experiences and skills represented on the board in order to most effectively serve the entire neighborhood. As we expand our board in 2022, we are planning to pay particular attention to ensuring increased representation of people who identify as BIPOC and/or LGBTQIA+; youth and/or seniors, Lloyd residents and/or business owners; people who have experienced housing insecurity; and/or people with a public safety and/or mental health background.

Recent Accomplishments

Board members are requested to sit on at least one standing or ad hoc committee as needed. Committees may include grant development, annual fundraising event, roadmap and program implementation, executive committee, etc. For example, over the past two years, one committee was instrumental in assisting staff plan outreach activities to make sure our 2030 Roadmap was including voices and perspectives from across our community.

A Nationally Certified EcoDistrict

In 2022, Lloyd EcoDistrict became recognized as a nationally-certified EcoDistrict, with a community-developed plan to promote equity, resilience, and climate protection on the neighborhood level. 

  • Conducted a two-year process to gather and synthesize the input of hundreds of stakeholders about their vision of place, prosperity, health & wellbeing, living infrastructure, resource regeneration, connectivity, and peace in Lloyd.
  • Developed a 2030 Roadmap with specific targets and benchmarks, and strategies to be implemented over the coming decade.
A Living Laboratory for Sustainability

Lloyd EcoDistrict’s Energy Action Plan targets a 33% reduction in building energy use by 2035. 

Our LED retrofit installation program, LAMP, provides energy reduction, cost savings, and direct social & community benefits. Our tracking and energy reduction efforts have already recorded the following successes:

  • District energy use has fallen by over 12% since 2010.
  • Greenhouse gas emissions have declined by 21.45% in the same time period.
  • In just last year, we installed over 1,300 LED fixtures and saved 80 tons of CO2.

Board members contribute their experience, knowledge, skills, and expertise to advancing the programmatic activities of the organization. For example, board members with experience in energy and property management, are key to providing strategic direction on our carbon reduction programs, like LAMP.
A Model for True Resiliency

The Right 2 Dream Too (R2DToo) homeless emergency rest area moved into the Lloyd neighborhood in 2017. Lloyd EcoDistrict helped ensure R2DToo got up and running quickly and resiliently.

  • Partnered with local high schools to develop and deploy ten solar-powered charging stations for resident use.
  • Built five tiny homes designed for the houseless members who live full-time on-site and operate the shelter.
  • Successfully fundraised $30,000 for R2DToo at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
