The second scheme can be an addition to the first proposal. It introduces vertical elements, the peace poles, to further strengthen the park’s theme of commemorating peace, and to create a more playful spatial experience. With thought provoking words and sayings inscribed into the poles, it will encourage deeper contemplation as one moves throughout the circle. This totem-like art collection of distinct peace poles increases the cultural diversity of the design. The juxtaposition of the peace poles embodies the core spirit of peace; respecting differences while living in harmony with them. There are also opportunities for Portland to engage sister cities around the world to contribute artwork representing peace and solidarity. The realization of this art installation will not be completed in one day, but with great fundraising efforts, so that the entire process allows all members of the community to become stakeholders. Ultimately, the Park will become more than just a physical landmark, but a place thriving within the community’s collective memory.
