With its burgeoning resident count, touching approximately 7,000 in the great Lloyd EcoDstrict (mostly apartment dwellers, mind you), the outcry for dog-friendly nooks has never been louder.

Sure, we’ve got Holladay Park, but it’s right in the thick of cars and trains. Lloyd EcoDistrict, Go Lloyd, and The Street Trust took action to create a space dedicated exclusively to furry friends and their owners.

Our canvas? Three metered parking spots at 9th and Multnomah Streets adjacent to Lloyd Center. For three hours, the spot was repurposed with a blanket of green turf, a makeshift doggie haven, some laid-back seating, and a few innovative cargo bikes tailored for pets. Adding a sprinkle of fun, Mike Bennett’s signs cheekily reminded drivers to dial back the speed.

The occasion drew a crowd of nearly 80 attendees—spanning from community enthusiasts to key advocacy groups like Sightline Institute, Better Block PDX, and the ever-popular Icicle Tricycles. Congressman Earl Blumenauer even made an appearance, offering his two cents. With Lloyd at a pivotal urban crossroad, PARK(ing) Day 2023 served as a lively testament to the potential of community-driven innovation. It’s a nudge towards a future where Lloyd’s spaces are green, functional, and fantastically fun.🌿🐾🚴‍♂️.

Wow! Over 400+ people attended the 2023 Party On, Portland! It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces enjoying the festivities at Holladay Park. Through the pandemic, Lloyd’s largest park has continued to be a place for community members to safely meet outside and enjoy a canopied green space in our beautiful city.

Guests enjoyed live music from the talented 24/7 Band, who played a great set of throwbacks, utilizing their seven-person band! As we all danced and bopped along to the music, our Executive Director Kristin and several volunteers grilled up all 500 hot dogs, which were distributed throughout the event. Yay for no food waste!

Thank you to all the businesses, non-profits, and local agencies who tabled! Your attendance made all the difference, not only for the awesome free goodies, but for keeping people informed about the various resources and opportunities available in our neighborhood.

Those who stopped by our Lloyd EcoDistrict table had a couple of activities to choose from: painting a pollinator cutout, filling out a fun shape on our EcoDistrict banner, or spinning our wheel to win candy, bubbles, cooling towels, radios, and emergency kits!

Throughout the event, several attendees expressed their appreciation for the lively activation of the park, further evidence that Lloyd, Sullivan’s Gulch, and Kerns are alive and well! It’s clear that local residents and visitors to the area value community and the safety that people in numbers can bring. We can’t wait to do it again next year!

We’ve just started planning for the year’s Give!Guide. Events and Activities will occur in November and December 2024.

Reflecting on the incredible journey from this past (and our first!) Give!Guide season, we’re overwhelmed by the immense support and generosity that has propelled Lloyd EcoDistrict towards achieving an astounding 89% of our goal in our first endeavor at individual giving. With $4,435 raised through 142 donations, we’ve seen our community come together in a way that truly exemplifies the power of collective action.

We’re particularly moved by the support from over 120 new donors who have joined our mission to create a more sustainable and resilient community. Your belief in our work fuels our commitment to making a meaningful impact.

Our heartfelt gratitude extends to our incredible partners who have gone above and beyond to ensure our campaign’s success. Special thanks to Mike Bennett Studios, Green Bridge Coffee, Keia & Martyn’s Coffee, and Way of Being for their generous incentives that enriched our donors’ contributions. Your dedication to community and sustainability mirrors our values and has been instrumental in amplifying our message.

To Upright Brewing and Broadway Grill & Brewery, your hospitality during our Holiday Happy Hours and Move & Groove Karaoke Night provided a welcoming space for our supporters and strengthened our community’s bonds. Your generosity has inspired us to bring neighbors together more frequently to support our local small businesses!

This year, we’ve passed the planning and event-organizing torch to the fabulous crew at NEBBA, the Northeast Broadway Business Association. The event will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2024. More info here.

What made the 2023 Broadway in Bloom stand out from other events was its strong emphasis on sustainability and environmental consciousness. The event was made possible by the collaboration with Bold Reuse, a sustainable company that provides reusable containers for food and beverage vendors. The initiative was a resounding success, boasting an impressive 97.7% return rate of the reusable containers, reflecting the community’s dedication to reducing waste and promoting reusable solutions!

Throughout the event, attendees had the opportunity to engage with a diverse range of participants, all dedicated to fostering a greener and healthier community. Go Lloyd provided free bike repair services, encouraging eco-friendly transportation options for locals. The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation’s booth offered information about their vital pollinator work. Meanwhile, Ridwell took the lead in supporting the low-waste initiative by providing onsite plastics recycling and sharing valuable insights about their expanded recycling services.

The sustainability theme continued with The Realm Refillery, encouraging attendees to bring their own jars and bottles for refills of various household products. Way of Being displayed an array of zero-waste home goods, inspiring visitors to adopt more sustainable practices in their everyday lives.

Gardening enthusiasts were not left out, as Master Gardeners shared valuable tips and tricks for nurturing plants and creating green spaces. Feed Em Freedom offered locally-grown produce for purchase, promoting the importance of supporting local farmers and reducing food miles.

Thank you to the Bottleneck Blues Band, who set the perfect tone for a night of fun and festivities.

We had a blast with our community during the first Lloyd Light it Up event at the Lloyd Center — and earlier that night at our community partner events around the EcoDistrict. 

As a part of the Portland Winter Light Festival 2024, and organized in partnership with the Lloyd Center, our community came out to illuminate a surprisingly dry and comfortable February night. 

The evening kicked off with at NE Wiedler and our friends at NEBBA, the NE Broadway Business Association, and their mural celebration. The amazing new large mural graces the back of the Broadway Grill & Brewery on the edge of the Lloyd EcoDistirct. neighborhood.

After the mural opening celebration, our Program Manager Joshua Baker assisted on a family-friendly bike ride that started from the mural. The bike ride, led by our neighbors at The Street Trust, led lit-up cyclists around the city and hit up different Portland Winter Light Festival sites across Central City.

Meanwhile, over at the Lloyd Center, the rest of our team was throwing our Light it Up Lloyd dance party. The glow sticks were cracked one by one as dancers of all kinds donned illuminated garb. PopCartPDX and DJ Carlos provided the electrifying musical backdrop for the festivities while Keia and Martyn’s Coffee served up delectable beverages. The dance party really got going when the bike riders arrived.
