July 2019 LEAFLET

July 2019 LEAFLET

Intersection Mural

On July 14th from 9 am – 4 pm, join us as we refresh the intersection mural on 2nd and Clackamas! We are partnering with muralists Rather Severe and nonprofit Color Outside the Lines, but we need your help to get everything done. This is a great way to meet your neighbors and take part in creating something beautiful in the Lloyd neighborhood.

We are splitting the work into 2 shifts with the first one starting at 9 am and going until 1 pm and the second shift starting at 1 pm through 4 pm. We will provide breakfast, lunch, and snacks to volunteers. Please sign up using the NobleHour link below, or contact Brian at brian@ecolloyd.org if you are interested in participating in this wonderful event.

Association of Oregon Recyclers Annual Convention

News and Views from Bend

Recently Lloyd EcoDistrict Operations Manager, Diana Foss, was fortunate to be awarded a scholarship to attend the Association of Oregon Recyclers annual convention, Sustainable Oregon. The convention took place over June 19th – 21st and was held in beautiful Bend, OR (see picture above). Roughly 250 people from all over Oregon and Washington attended. While there were several great sessions to choose from at the event, the keynote speaker really hit home for Diana. She gained a new perspective on recycling and reflected on her experience in a blog post. Teaser: Recycling may not have the impact you expect. Please click the link below for the full story.

Holladay Park Summer Activities

Stop by and say hi!

Over the summer, beginning July 10th, we will be in the park doing outreach on Wednesdays from 12 pm – 1 pm. Come by and say hi and see what other groups and organizations are doing in the park. If you haven’t been to the park yet this summer be sure to swing by. Throughout the summer different activities will be going on, so be sure to walk by and check them out or just get out and enjoy the sun!

Contact Brian at brian@ecolloyd.org if you would like to host a community event or activity in the park this summer.

Peace Memorial Park Partner Highlight

Koch Landscape Architecture Senior Associate Colleen Wolfe

Senior Associate Colleen Wolfe has taken an active role in the planning process for our recent efforts in pollinator placemaking. She has also provided valuable input on how we can reactivate the space. Colleen was introduced to Sarah, the Executive Director of Lloyd EcoDistrict, by a mutual planner friend. She has always had an interest in community projects and felt like this was a great way to engage the community that she works in. The park’s message and mission also excited her to join in on our efforts. Adding up the prospect of a Lloyd specific project, that is a great way to engage the community in a shared open space, with the message of promoting peace and pollinator species, everything aligned perfectly with several of her passions.

“The opportunity to showcase native and native adaptive plants, that promote pollinator species was a real draw”, Colleen said. During and after the cleanup effort Colleen would hum to herself “I know what birds want, I know what bees need” to the tune of I Know What Boys Like by the Waitresses. That was how she knew that she was really committed to the project. Her vision for the future of Peace Memorial Park Pollinator Garden is a safe, accessible space, that brings people together and builds community. While the goal is for the park to be fairly low maintenance Colleen reminds us, “The Peace Park will require a bit of maintenance, but then again peace requires some maintenance as well. Maintaining a garden is a good reminder that good things require care and attention.”

We are grateful to have such a dedicated community partner on board for this project and appreciate all of the volunteers and partners that make it possible.

Peace Memorial Park Cleanup pt. 2

We are holding another Peace Memorial Park Pollinator Garden cleanup party!

Things grow quickly this time of year and weeds are no exception. We will be putting on another cleanup party, Saturday, August 10th from 9 am – 1 pm. We will have tools, but be sure to bring gloves! This cleanup should be easier thanks to the wonderful work the volunteers did during our May effort, but we still need your help!
