Goodbye, MAX Type 1

TriMet invites the community to celebrate the legacy of its original light rail vehicles, the Type 1 MAX trains, as they prepare to retire after nearly 40 years of service.

The public celebration takes place on Saturday, April 18, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Holladay Park in Northeast Portland, adjacent to the Lloyd Center/NE 11th Ave MAX Station. Attendees will have the opportunity to experience these historic trains up close and interact with them, possibly for the final time.

Introduced in 1986, the Type 1 vehicles launched modern light rail in the Portland metro area and helped set a standard for transit systems across the country. Over the decades, they have provided millions of trips and traveled countless miles, becoming a lasting symbol of regional transportation.

As TriMet transitions to newer trains, the remaining Type 1 vehicles are being retired after exceeding their service life. This event honors not only the trains themselves, but also the many employees, past and present, who have kept them running over the years.
