Mural Recap: Bringing Color Back to the Lloyd Intersection

In July, we welcomed neighbors and volunteers to help repaint the Lloyd Intersection Mural at NE 2nd Avenue and Clackamas Street. Originally painted in 2017, the mural is refreshed every few years to keep it looking its best. This year’s repainting brought together residents, local partners, and volunteers for a weekend of painting and neighborhood activities. 

Over the weekend, 20 volunteers helped repaint the mural. We were excited to see neighbors from Miracles Central Apartments, The Merrick Apartments, Cornerstone Apartments, The Louisa Flowers Apartments, and Hassalo on Eighth spend time painting together. Many residents from Calaroga Terrace also stopped by throughout the day to watch the progress, ask questions, and enjoy seeing the mural return to the intersection.

Alongside the repainting, we hosted a Play Street with activities, music, and other family-friendly programming. While volunteers worked on painting the mural, ZRE Music Studios set up music lessons that drew in more neighbors.

Between sections of painting, people took breaks for bagels, muffins, frozen treats, and plenty of conversation. The pace was relaxed, making it easy for volunteers, neighbors, and curious passersby to spend time together, whether they were painting or just stopping to watch.

By Sunday afternoon, the mural looked new again. The paint had dried, the colors were bright, and the intersection had its color back.
