🌿 Peace in Progress: Phase 1 of Peace Memorial Park Revitalization Begins
What if a park could reflect the spirit of an entire neighborhood? At Peace Memorial Park, that vision is becoming a reality—one phase at a time. With strong community backing and years of advocacy finally bearing fruit, Phase 1 of revitalization is officially underway.
Thanks to new funding, dedicated partners, and deep neighborhood love, we’re transforming this iconic space into a beacon of sustainability, remembrance, and resilience.
🛠️ What’s Happening in Phase 1
Here’s what you can expect by July 1, 2025:
- 🌸 Pollinator Garden – A vibrant native habitat will support butterflies, bees, and the broader ecosystem, expanding on our pollinator corridor work.
- 💧 Drip Irrigation System – Efficient watering infrastructure will reduce water use and help the park thrive in hotter summers.
- 🎨 Amphitheater-Style Mural – In partnership with Portland Street Art Alliance and artist Jeremy Nichols, the concrete steps will be transformed into a peace-themed mural that uplifts and invites.
- ✌️ Peace Sign Reinstallation – This symbol of hope and unity is being reimagined and installed.
These improvements are led by PLACE, who have long supported this project through generous pro bono design work and community-focused planning.
đź’¸ Years of Support, Finally in Bloom
This progress has been made possible through years of local and national fundraising success, including:
- $85,000+ raised to date
- Local support from Union Pacific, East Portland Rotary, and more
- National funding via Swire Coca Cola through the U.S. Council of Mayors, with a local boost from the Mayor’s office
Just as important: we now have a renewable stewardship agreement with PBOT, giving Lloyd EcoDistrict the green light to lead this vital transformation.
🌍 Community Stewardship in Action
Peace Memorial Park isn’t just a space—it’s a shared responsibility. For example, this year’s Earth Day cleanup, organized with our long-time partner SOLVE, brought nearly 60 volunteers to clear trash, weeds, and debris from the park, the Esplanade, and surrounding areas.
It’s part of a broader pattern of consistent stewardship, monthly cleanups, and community activation that’s turning this once-overlooked space into a hub for healing, gathering, and climate resilience.

🌀 A Look Ahead: Phases 2 + 3
- Phase 2 (2026): Focused on the park’s “wings,” this phase will add landscaping, stormwater solutions, and improved walkways
- Phase 3 (2027): Will introduce public art, educational signage, and lighting for visibility, safety, and storytelling
Each phase will be executed as funding becomes available. We are actively seeking additional support from local, state, and private sources.
